Field Trip Day!

WARNING!!!! LOTS of pics!!!
We had a field trip on Thursday with some families from our coop. There were only a few families that were able to make it but we still had fun. There were 19 of us all together. First we visited http://roadsidegeorgia.com/site/wormsloe.html. The first stop at Wormsloe, after driving down the mile long driveway lined with 400 live oaks, was the small gift shop and museum. A lot of the stuff in the museum is artifacts that were actually found by the architects on the old Wormsloe home site.

Kristen looking at the model of the home site...

Ian checking out the old wooden barrels (probably thinking if he could climb on top of them before getting caught!)

The family history...

Ian and Cade "shooting" the cannon!

I caught Aaron off guard in this pic....LOL

Morgan and Sara..

Aaron checking out the cannon now...

Looking at some of the artifacts..

Morgan looking at the tabby display. The colonial people began using tabby to build their homes. It was a mixture made with oyster shells. It was cheaper and less work than using bricks.

The cannon was a big hit with the little guys!

Aaron and Tyler looking at the medical equipment...

I am glad I didn't have to go to the Dr in these days....this stuff is scary looking!!!! YIKES!!

After the museum, we watched a short film in the movie room and then headed outside to meet Mr. Thompson for the living family life presentation.

Mr. Thompson did a great job explaining how the different tools and other things were used in colonial days. He also kept the kids involved during the entire program, asking them to come up to help demonstrate.

First he talked about the clothing during that era....

Aaron helping split cedar wood to make shingles for the roof.

Then Morgan got to try to split some too....

Kristen and Ian demonstrating an auger..

The draw blade...

The cooking pots...

Starting a fire using the tender box and a piece of flint and steel....

Blowing to get the sparks to grow....

SUCCESS!! They made a fire!! ( hard to see but there are small flames )

The demonstration lasted over an hour, then we headed down the trail to the actual site of the ruins.

Morgan posing in front of the ruins of the old home site....

You can see here how the walls were made using the tabby I mentioned before....

Overlooking the marshes...It was low tide at the time, but when the tide is high, this would have been their access to the main water routes.

Aaron climbed up on this big cedar tree!!

Heading back out down the driveway....it is soooo pretty!

Next stop was http://gastateparks.org/info/skidaway/. We took a break to eat lunch at the picnic area and the kids played for a minute on the playground.

Then we headed over to meet the park ranger to begin our scavenger hunt. This is not a typical scavenger hunt, we each got a sheet of questions and we had to find the answers in the different areas of the park.....

Morgan and Sara posing outside the interpretive center...

Ian's turn to pose...

Inside the interpretive center, they have this replica of a giant ground sloth!!! I am glad I have never come face to face with one of these guys LIVE!!

To give an idea....Aaron is about 5 feet 7 inches tall!!

Morgan looking at the turtle poster telling me which one she liked....

Bird watching in the bird room!

Wildlife display....

She found an answer!!

Ian looking at the turtle shell...

Now heading out on the nature trail to find more answers to the scavenger hunt...

The view from one of the boardwalks on the nature trail...

Watching the little sand crabs below the boardwalk....there were tons of them crawling all over..

Once we all had found the answers, we went back inside to turn our paper back in and choose a prize from the prize box. It was really hot outside on the trail so we decided to sit in the bird room and cool off before heading home. It was really neat to watch all the different birds that were flying around.

It was a great day and it didn't take long for everyone to crash once we got on the road to come home!!
